Artist Statement: 

This body of work builds off of my research into handmade, plant-based, and repurposed art materials to create a visual study of Aisinai’pi (Writing-On-Stone), where I lived and worked in 2023 to 2024. Living there impacted me greatly; I spent as much time as I could observing everything from the plants and animals to the horizon. Seeing Katoyis (the Sweet Pine/ Sweetgrass Hills) every day became a ritual, and I know that these hills have influenced my thinking since. Painting the landscapes around Aisinai’pi, often by memory or en plein air, became a way of relationship building with the land. Using materials from the land to make work with and about the land has brought me full circle. 

 

My initial exploration in making my own art materials came from interests in traditional plant knowledge, sustainability, and a resistance to capitalist cycles of mass production/consumption. Time is not wasted learning from the plants themselves or making things that could be easily bought. Through this sort of artistic sovereignty, I find greater personal connection to my materials, my work, and the world around me.
